Our Super Secret GA-uest for 2008!
Our Super Secret Guest (in absentia) for this year is...
Meg Davis!
We've been trying to make arrangements for Meg to attend GAFilk for many years now. Her health issues make travel and conventions a very iffy proposition. We've long felt it was worth making whatever accommodation necessary so that Meg can see how much she has meant to the filk community. This year, we thought we had everything taken care of and were rarin' to go.
Unfortunately, Real Life intervened. As a result of medication changes, Meg notified us just in the last week that she would be unable to attend the convention.
As you might expect, we are very sorry not to see her, but we assured Meg that her health takes precedence over everything else. Normally, we would move on and you (the con attendees) would know nothing about this. This time, however, we decided to take the opportunity to announce that Meg will be attending a future GAFilk — as soon as her health coincides with the convention. For obvious reasons, we won't be able to announce it until she actually shows up at the con, but when that day comes we will be oh, so happy.
"You keep inviting me and I keep trying... which must be 'trying' for you. 2008 has me planning to record a new CD. If I can get that done to get new music to my fans, and especially my GAFilk fans, I'll be doing good. I'll hang in there, you stick with me and maybe 2008 will bring a medical breakthrough that will help me and thousands like me. You folks are the best, seriously. You make me feel wanted and that is the best medicine an artist can have. Give my love and regrets to all, and have a great GAFilk '08.
Meanwhile, keep good thoughts for Meg, and watch her website at www.megdavis.com.
Soooooo...
...Accepting as Super Secret Guest on Meg's behalf is...
Peter Beagle!
Peter Beagle is the acclaimed author of fantasy fiction such as The Last Unicorn, A Fine and Private Place, The Folk of the Air, The Innkeeper's Song, A Dance for Emilia, and Tamsin. This year he won both the Hugo and the Nebula Awards for his novelette, Two Hearts. His work has inspired songs and songwriters, and he is another of those rare individuals — an author who genuinely appreciates filk and filkers.
Peter is also a talented singer/songwriter in his own right, often performing in coffee houses, clubs, and at conventions. He's a very fine guitarist, and he owns a rich and resonant baritone voice. He's been a guest at filk conventions in the U.S., including the 1986 BayFilk where he shared co-GoH honors with the amazing Meg Davis. That meeting established an enduring friendship between the two performers, so Peter was very pleased to be asked to accept GAFilk's Super Secret Guestship on behalf of Meg. We consider ourselves blessed to have him — but not as blessed as you will be. What a treat is in store for you! Wonderful songs, delightful stories, and fascinating conversations with a giant in the fantasy community. Thank you, Peter, so very much for coming to GAFilk!
